Canada adds surtaxes on more than 700 US products

From September 8, US made goods in the affected groups face 15%, 25% or 50% at the Canadian border, with clothing in the 50% group.

On September 8, 2026, Canada applied surtaxes of 15% to 50% on more than 700 US products. Clothing and apparel are in the 50% group.

The surtax applies to goods that count as made in the US under the trade rules. A T shirt printed in the US on a blank made in another country is judged by where the blank was made, which is why the country of origin in your catalogue matters.

For Canadian customers of stores that print or stock goods in the US, this can mean a large charge at the door on top of GST or HST. Othermile shows the charge for each route before the order ships and suggests the route that avoids it.
