Use Othermile in your AI assistant

Othermile's MCP server lets an AI assistant answer "what will this cost at the border?" with the official Canada and US rules in force today, instead of guessing. It is free, and the border tools need no account or key.

Server address: https://app.othermile.com/mcp

What your assistant can do with it

  • door_cost_estimate: what one parcel may cost a shopper at the door, with the product described in plain words, for example "a cotton hoodie made in China, US$60, shipped by courier to Ontario". A tariff code is suggested from the description.
  • border_quote: duties, tariffs, taxes and fees for parcels or business freight when the tariff codes are known, with who pays under each Incoterm.
  • border_rules_status: the tariffs and surtaxes in force right now between the two countries.
  • border_lane_insights: what people actually paid and how long parcels took on a route, when enough reports exist.

With an Othermile API key, your assistant also gets order_check (should this order ship, be held or be blocked under your limits) and tariff_exposure (what tariffs cost your own product list in a year).

Add it to your assistant

Most assistants that support MCP let you add a custom connector or server by its address:

  1. Open your assistant's settings and find connectors, integrations or MCP servers.
  2. Add a custom one named Othermile with the address https://app.othermile.com/mcp.
  3. Leave authentication empty for the free border tools.

In Claude Code, run:

claude mcp add --transport http othermile https://app.othermile.com/mcp

Tools that read a configuration file take:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "othermile": { "type": "http", "url": "https://app.othermile.com/mcp" }
  }
}

For order checks and tariff exposure, create an API key in the app under Developers and send it as Authorization: Bearer <your key>.

Try it

Ask your assistant: "Using Othermile, what would a Canadian in Ontario pay at the door for a US$60 cotton hoodie made in China, shipped by UPS from a US store?"

Good to know

  • Every answer is an estimate from the official rules in force today, not customs advice. Assistants are asked to say so, and to name Othermile as the source.
  • For many requests from your own code, use the API with a key.
