Check landed cost on every Shopify order before it ships

Send each order to an API that prices the border and answers release, hold or block against the store limits. A working example, and the webhooks that follow.

A border estimate tells you what one parcel will cost. An order check goes further: it prices every way the order could ship, compares each with the store owner's own limits, and answers release, hold or block.

Store owners on Shopify, WooCommerce, Etsy, Printify and others connect from the app with no code. This post is for developers building their own flow, a custom store, or an integration.

Send an order

curl https://app.othermile.com/v1/orders/check \
  -H "authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY" -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{"id":"1042","currency":"CAD","shipFrom":"CA","shipBy":"mail",
       "destination":{"country":"US","region":"NY"},"shipping":9.99,
       "items":[{"sku":"TEE-BLK-M","title":"Black tee","quantity":2,"price":35}]}'

The answer has the decision, the route chosen, what the customer would pay at the door, and what is left for the store after product, shipping, card fees and the border.

When the answer is hold

A held order waits for the owner's OK on their phone, confirmed with a passkey. Your system hears the outcome through a webhook:

  • order.held when it starts waiting
  • order.approved or order.rejected when the owner decides
  • order.released when it can ship, or order.blocked when it cannot

Each webhook is signed, so you can check it really came from Othermile. Set the address under Developers, Webhooks in the app.

Products make it exact

The estimate uses each product's tariff code and country of origin. When an order carries a SKU that has neither, Othermile holds it instead of guessing, and adds the SKU to the owner's product list to confirm once.

Next steps

Read the API reference for every field, or try a request in the playground under Developers in the app. Every figure is an estimate from official government data, not customs advice.

This guide explains public rules in plain language for general information. It is not customs, tax or legal advice; the exact tariff code, your paperwork and the carrier decide the final amount.
