ClutchCloth and Othermile: no surprise border bills
ClutchCloth, an automotive apparel brand, checks every order for border costs before it is printed. Meet the brand, Othermile, and how it works.
By the Othermile team

Your project car already sends enough surprise bills. Your T shirt should not add one. That is the idea behind ClutchCloth and Othermile working together: every ClutchCloth order is checked for border costs before it is printed, so car people on both sides of the Canada and US border get their shirts without a bill at the door.
Who ClutchCloth is
ClutchCloth is an automotive apparel brand made for car culture: the people who spend their weekends in the garage, their savings on parts, and their evenings at meets. Its shirts carry the CLUTCH mark, with designs for builders who would rather earn a car than buy one, which is where the brand's motto, built not bought, comes from.
Every piece is printed on demand and shipped to customers across Canada and the United States. That keeps the range fresh and the waste low, but it also means a single order can be printed in one country, sewn from a blank made in another, and delivered to a third. Find the full range at clutchcloth.com and the latest drops on Instagram at @clutchclothco.
Who Othermile is
Othermile is a Calgary company that checks every online order for the Canada and US border before it is printed or shipped. It works out what the customer would pay at the door in duty, tax and carrier fees, compares every way the order could go out, and applies the limits the store owner sets. An order that fits goes ahead on its own. One that does not waits for the owner's OK on their phone, confirmed with a passkey, with every option priced side by side. Shoppers can also see an estimate before they buy, so the price they pay is the price they expected.
Othermile connects to Printify, Printful, Shopify, WooCommerce and many other stores and printers, and keeps a signed record of every decision. Its estimates come from official government data and are updated every day. They are estimates, not customs advice.
Why a T shirt can cost more at the border than it should
Apparel is one of the most common things sold across the border, and one of the easiest to get caught by:
- Into the US, every parcel now goes through customs. The US suspended its duty free allowance for small parcels on August 29, 2025. A shirt from Canada now pays the ordinary duty for its tariff code from the first dollar, plus any extra tariff on the country where it was made.
- Where it was made matters more than where it ships from. Customs looks at where a garment was sewn, not where it was printed. A blank sewn in Asia and printed in North America is still, for most customs purposes, a shirt made in Asia. Our guide to print on demand and where products are made explains why.
- Into Canada, the parcel's value and the carrier decide. A courier parcel from the US worth C$150 or less owes no duty, and no tax up to C$40. Above that, or by mail, duty and sales tax apply, and the carrier adds a handling or brokerage fee on top.
- Tariffs change. New tariffs on goods from particular countries can start with little notice. The tariff tracker shows how the border cost of a T shirt and other products has moved, with every change marked.
When nobody checks, the customer finds out at the door. Some pay the bill and never order again. Some refuse the parcel, and the store pays to ship it back.
How ClutchCloth checks every order
ClutchCloth connects its Printify store to Othermile. From there, every order follows the same steps:
- The order arrives and waits. Before anything goes to production, Othermile works out the border cost for the customer's province or state, using each product's tariff code and the country its blank was made in.
- Every route is priced. The printer's usual facility, a different print provider, mail or courier: each option shows what ClutchCloth pays, what the customer may pay at the door, and what is left after costs.
- The owner gets a message. Every order waits for an OK first, so the design, the print provider and the route can be changed before production. The waiting order shows in the Othermile app on the phone and arrives by email, and approving it takes a passkey, so nobody else can approve on the owner's behalf.
- Production starts only after the OK. If the order was changed at the printer while it waited, Othermile checks it again with the new numbers before it goes ahead.
- Every decision is recorded. A signed record shows what was known, which option was chosen, and when.
What it means for ClutchCloth customers
For the people who wear the shirts, all of this is quiet. They order, the shirt arrives, and there is no bill at the door. When a border charge cannot be avoided, the store knows before the shirt is printed and can choose to ship duty paid or show the cost up front. Customers are never left to find out from a courier.
Selling apparel across the border too
Any print on demand or apparel store can do the same. A few places to start:
- See what your past orders cost at the door. The free border cost audit reads an orders export from your store and shows which orders would have owed something, by product and province or state.
- Check one order. The free shopper checker prices a single order by mail and by courier.
- Read the guide for your product. The T shirt guide shows the cost at common order values for every province and territory.
- Watch for changes. Free tariff alerts send an email when the rules for a product you pick change.
- Check every order automatically. Create a free account and connect your store or printer. Every order is checked before it is printed or shipped.

This guide explains public rules in plain language for general information. It is not customs, tax or legal advice; the exact tariff code, your paperwork and the carrier decide the final amount.
