Install Othermile from the Shopify App Store to check every order for Canada and US duties, tariffs and fees, and hold the costly ones in Shopify.

Short answer: Othermile is now on the Shopify App Store. Install it and every new order is checked for Canada and US duties, tariffs, taxes and carrier fees before it ships. Orders that would cost your customer too much at the door, or cost you too much to ship, get a hold in Shopify until you approve them on your phone.

Why a Shopify store needs a duties check

A Shopify order to the other side of the border can carry costs that checkout never showed. Your customer may owe sales tax, duty, a tariff on where the product was made and the carrier's clearance fee when the parcel arrives. Some refuse to pay, the parcel comes back, and you pay for shipping twice. Othermile works out those amounts for each order from the official rules in force, so you know before you ship.

An order that would surprise the customer waits for the owner's OK, with every way to ship it priced side by side.

What the Othermile app does in Shopify

  • Checks every order as it comes in. Each order is priced by mail, courier and any other way you ship, with the duty, tax and fees the customer would pay at the door.
  • Holds the costly ones in Shopify. An order outside your limits gets a hold in your Shopify admin, so nobody fulfils it by mistake. Approve it in Othermile with your passkey and the hold is released. Nothing else in the order changes.
  • Duties included shipping at checkout. Offer shipping rates that include the duty and tax, so customers pay once and meet no bill at the door. Your Shopify plan must include carrier calculated shipping.
  • The door estimate on product pages. Add the Othermile block in your theme editor and shoppers see what they may pay at the door before they buy.
  • Tariff codes sent back to Shopify. Confirm a tariff code and country of origin once, and send them to your Shopify products for your customs forms.

How to install it

  1. Open Othermile on the Shopify App Store and press Install.
  2. Approve what the app may read. It reads orders and products; it keeps the destination country and province, not your customers' names or addresses.
  3. Sign in to Othermile, or create a free account, and your store is connected.
  4. Set your limits: the most a customer should pay at the door, the most you will lose on shipping and the lowest margin you accept. Leave any of them empty to skip it.

What it costs

Othermile has a free plan to start. Paid plans for Shopify stores are billed through your Shopify invoice, so there is no second card to manage. See pricing for what each plan includes.

Not on Shopify?

Shopify is one of many places Othermile connects. WooCommerce, Etsy, Printify, Printful, Whatnot and other stores and printers connect from the app, and so does a spreadsheet. See every connection and start free from there.

These are estimates from the official rules, not customs advice.

This guide explains public rules in plain language for general information. It is not customs, tax or legal advice; the exact tariff code, your paperwork and the carrier decide the final amount.
